Sunday morning is usually my day to catch up on YouTube, gun blogs, forums, and the like. I have been kicking around the idea of buying a upper in a different caliber than the standard and ubiquitous 223 Remington / 5.56 x 45 NATO round. Looked at the 6.5 Grendel, 300 Blackout, 50 Beowulf a couple other odd ones, but never really gave any thought to the .458 SOCOM round. Then, it happened. I watched a cool YouTube video with the monster round. Demolition Ranch does a cool video showing some of the power of the .458 SOCOM Round.
So what is the deal with the .458 SOCOM? Well it is a bit of a tame monster. I’ve been a fan of the legendary 45/70 for a few years now since I got my first lever action Marlin. Wilson Combat has the following to say about the .458 SOCOM:
The 458 SOCOM cartridge offers the practical ballistics of the legendary .45-70 in a modern AR platform rifle and is capable of firing 250 to 600 grain .458 caliber bullets in a lightweight, controllable package. For hunting medium to large game, bullets in the 250 grain– 400 grain weight range possess devastating killing power. We have found that the .458 SOCOM offers peak downrange performance when firing the purpose built Barnes 300 grain TAC TX bullet in the 1750fps – 1800fps velocity range.
So lets look at the benefits:
- AR-15 Platform
- 45-70 Power
- Short Barrel Options
- Self Defece Options & Hunting Options
So what’s next? Well as I down my journey in either buying a 458 SOCOM or just a 458 SOCOM upper I’ll continue to update my findings and experience for the newbies out there, like me.
